Summer in Upstate South Carolina can be hot and steamy. In other words, it’s a perfect time to head for the beach, the lake or the mountains. Unfortunately, your prime vacation time is prime time for burglars. Wherever you go, whether it’s during the summer or any other time, take some precautions to keep your custom crafted home secure. Here are some tips:
Watch Your Home from Anywhere
There are many affordable systems on the market that allow you to install cameras around your home, including in a doorbell device. The cameras link up to your in-home Wi-fi and are activated by motion. They can turn on lights or alert your cellphone.
Let There be Light!
Burglars love to see a home that has been dark for a few nights. If you are going to be gone frequently or for an extended amount of time, invest in a timer or lights that can be controlled through a phone app. That way, you can turn on some lights from anywhere, and it always looks like someone is home. For that matter, many apps and timers work with TV, radios and other equipment to give the appearance that someone is home.
Lock Your Windows and Doors
It should go without say to lock your doors, but we’ll say it anyway – make sure all of your doors are locked before you leave! Lock all your windows, too. This goes for second story windows that could be accessed by a tree or other exterior structure.
Have Someone Stop By
Give a spare key to someone you trust to stop by daily just to get the mail and newspaper, go inside for a while and park in the driveway. A burglar could be looking for a vacant home to hit but pass you by because someone is home.
Keep Up Exterior Maintenance
This is especially important if you are going to be gone for an extended amount of time. Burglars are likely to consider a home with a stack of newspapers in the driveway and a yard that hasn’t been mowed in a week.
Hold Mail and Newspapers
A pile of newspapers or a full mailbox is a clear indication that no one is home. If you don’t have someone stopping by daily to take mail and newspapers inside, call the post office and the newspaper to put a hold on your delivery.
Be Careful with Social Media
You might relish the idea of bragging to everyone on social media that you are heading to the beach for two weeks. Unfortunately, that is an invitation to let a lot of people know you won’t be home. Don’t put up that “Come Rob Me” sign! Wait until you get home to post those fantastic vacation pictures.
Get a Security System
You don’t need an expensive, top-of-the-line alarm system to keep unwanted guests away. Just the thought of an alarmed home is enough to keep many burglars away.
